Spiritual perfection or goal cannot be achieved, unless it is
solidly and firmly rooted in ethical and moral values. To be completely ethical
and moral is a basic requirement of any real progress in spiritual field. The
ethical or moral conduct is known as ‘Dharma’. Dharma is the very base the
foundation on which a spiritual temple can be build. Any spiritual construction
without a foundation of Dharma, without ethical base, would be like a structure
built on the sand. One has to be really a good man before he can became a Godly
man. One can be good man, without being a godly man, but no person could be a
godly man without being a good man, ethical man.
To be good man, is to be Satpurusha (meledHegª<e) to be a man
of first Category, as categorised by that great king philosopher, Raja
Bharthahari. These are persons, who seek the goodness of other, who seek welfare
of others, by sacrificing their own interest, these people are highly ethical,
practice ethics of self effacement, of renunciation and selfless service. They
are embodiment of two great ethical qualities of ‘Tyaga’ and ‘Seva’. They
practice the divine acts of sharing, serving and scarifying and all these are
dominate by spirit of love and selfless service. They believe and practice
dynamic selflessness and selfless service. They inhale love and exhale service.
The normal selflove instinct of a common man, is replaced by love for all, in
case of a good, and ethical man. This selflessness and love for all is expressed
in a dynamic manner, by selfless service, service for service sake, no motive,
no expectation of any reward or even recognition. It is done silently, and as
Swami Vivekananda puts it many Karmayogis quietly end their journey, without
being recognised. It is done as sake duty for duty’s sake. An ethical man, a
good man, is river of compassion, fountain of kindness, ocean of love, a spring
of selfless service, believing that human life is for service of mankind.
Tragedy of human history, particularly of India, is under
mining or ignoring the social ethics, which is a real foundation of society’s
existence, its progress and its happiness, its welfare. Unfortunately, in the
history the society is individual based whereas in an ideal welfare society it
should be society based. It must be recognised that individual is for the
society and not the society is for the individual. Most of us behave as if the
society exists for us, it is a means and we ourselves are the end. However in
truth it is the individual who is the means and society is the end, and each
individual is a means to achieve the common welfare of the society, and
individual interest, lies in the common welfare of the society and his welfare
cannot be at the cost of the social interest.
Each individual in the society is a bundle of energy each has
great potentiality. This energy cannot be suppressed. It has to be properly
channelised this energy is either used for the self glorification, self
acquisition, self gratification, for one own name and fame. The same may be used
and is mostly used, to achieve the three ‘P’s pleasure, property and power. It
is used for grabbing, it is used for seeking and serving self interest at the
cost of others’ interest, at the cost of the interest of the society. As against
that realising that the individual is the means and the social interest, the
common interest of all is the goal and the end of all human existence, the
individual energy has to be diverted and to be channelised to achieve and to
contribute to the common welfare of the society as a whole. The individual is
for the society, he is a social being first, and his welfare is directly linked
with the welfare of the society as a whole. Each individual has to seek and see
that each individual in the society becomes fit to live with all basic amenities
available to each and every member of the society. In society there should be a
welfare Raj, seeking welfare of all. It should not be as it is today, jungle Raj
where it is the survival of the fittest.
Only those societies where social ethics, is dominant would
progress. On the other hand where self interest self love, self glorification
take driver’s seat at the expense of the common good and common welfare, that
society will meet a certain disaster and destruction.
Coming to our own country, though there were great efforts by
great personalities like Lord Krishna, Lord Buddha, Lord Mahavir, and others to
bring social ethics into our society, in the ancient times, Rajaram Mohan Roy,
Ramkrishna Paramahansa, Swami Vivekananda, Maharshi Arvindo, Mahatma Gandhi, and
others in the modern times, our society has largely remained individualist,
sadly lacking social ethics and there is no awareness of social responsibilities
and duties. Individually, we have produced great giants, but collectively we
have failed to achieve the common welfare of the society as whole. Even in the
spiritual feild, the dominant idea is individual mukti, rather than deliverance
of all.
We Indians, are individually quite intelligent, efficient and
comparatively good also. But because, of lack of social sense, leading to
disregard to social duties and responsibilities, the condition of Indian society
is very pathetic, facing all possible social evils. As a people we are not
lacking in intelligence, as a country we are not lacking in natural or even
human resources, in culture we are not lacking in great eras of expansive minds
and impressive achievements. But all this has gone waste and is going to be
waste, because we lack sterling character dominated by social spirit. We have
not become from individual to persons, from persons to enlightened citizens,
from enlightened citizens, to noble nationalists, and from nationalists to great
international human beings.
One silver lining, in otherwise gloomy atmosphere, is that,
the present Indian youth, Indian children and students are highly efficient,
very smart extremely capable with dare devil attitude and brimming with self
confidence. It is great treasure of the country. However, this great youth
energy must be properly channelised. We must train them educate them in right
direction. The education should not be as it is now just information based.
Remember children are lights to be lit and not just empty vessels to fill them
with information of facts and figures. In the words Romond Rolland, unless along
with knowledge we grow in wisdom, it will lead to sorrow. It should be in the
words of Swami Vivekananda, ‘Man making education,’ to make heroes out of our
children and to see that again in the words of Swami Vivekananda.
‘A hundred thousand men and women, fired with the zeal of
holiness, fortified with eternal faith in the Lord, and nerved to lion’s courage
by their sympathy for the poor and the fallen and the downtrodden, will go over
the length and breadth of the land, preaching the gospel of salvation, the
gospel of help, the gospel of social raising-up the gospel of equality.’
Unless, we properly channelise this tremendous energy, it
will be used for destructive purposes. They will become the citizens, of 3rd and
4th categories as categorised by of Raja Bharthahari, and they will be a great
liability, to the nation as a whole. Proper education and responsible role to be
played by parents and teachers, may be a right answer, to prevent this real
danger facing our society.
