Headlines
What is first page news and
worth a front-page headline? The subject is obviously debatable. What is
front-page news for an evening newspaper or society supplement may not find any
mention on the front-page of a national daily. However the lines between the two
are getting increasingly blurred. The apparent trivia, which made it to the
front pages of several national dailies recently, must have evoked different
reactions from readers of these dailies: from a frown to a chuckle. Here is a
selection of such headlines:
-
Ash-Abhishekh to tie the knot
-
Ash’s Temple Mark has Nation Buzzing
-
Furore in UK over treatment of Shilpa
-
Shettys duped Us
-
Chappell gets blow in back, probe ordered
-

C(H)ORUS
On the serious side and of
genuine national importance, newspapers carried headlines of the “CORUS”
takeover by the Tatas, India’s well-respected and prominent Business House.
The acquisition, which cost Tata Steel a whopping Rs. 54,000 crores,
makes it the fifth largest steel producer in the world. This deal, which comes
close on the heals of the Arcelor Mittal deal, marks a consolidation of steel
producers. The Tatas will obviously benefit from the deal but it is expected
that other Indian industries that use steel as an input, would benefit by way of
lower costs. At the same time there is need to temper euphoria: for, now the
steel-producers would be having increased control over steel prices. Perhaps
recognizing this and also the impression that the deal is overpriced, the Tata
Steel scrip lost value on the stock exchanges.
